In 2017, a team of psychologists at the University of Waterloo brought 115 couples into a lab and gave each pair two assignments. Discuss a disagreement about money, chores, in-laws. Then discuss a disagreement about sex.
Before the second conversation, anxiety went up. Same partner, same room. The only thing that changed was the topic.
The Waterloo team later named the three fears that any hard conversation with a partner activates:
that it will threaten the relationship,
that it will hurt your partner,
and that it will change how you see yourself.
All three run high in every kind of conflict. What made the sexual conversation different was the last one. Talking about sex felt like a bigger threat to the self than talking about anything else. Which is why so many couples who can negotiate a mortgage, a move, and a mother-in-law go quiet the moment the subject turns to what they actually want in bed.
And most of them never say it.
In the largest study ever done on long-term American couples, a Chapman University and Kinsey Institute team surveyed 38,747 people who’d been together at least three years.
About 83% said they’d been satisfied with their sex life in the first six months.
Now? About half. Twenty-seven percent of women and 41 percent of men said they were dissatisfied.
Satisfied couples were roughly twice as likely as dissatisfied ones to praise something their partner did in bed, ask for what they wanted, or bring up their fantasies.
What you get when you learn
A 2019 meta-analysis in The Journal of Sex Research pooled 48 studies on couples’ sexual communication. Talking about sex was linked to more desire, more arousal, more lubrication, more reliable orgasms, better erections, and less pain.
The link with desire and orgasm was stronger for women than for men.
The effect was biggest for married couples. The longer you’ve been together, the more this conversation is worth.
Why it feels so heavy
Most couples only talk about sex when something is wrong.
If the only time the subject comes up is when one of you is unhappy, then “can we talk about sex?” becomes a threat by definition. Your partner’s nervous system learns that the conversation means bad news. Of course they brace.
Couples who do this well aren’t braver than you. They talk about sex when it’s good, so the subject stops being an alarm bell.
Then, when something needs adjusting, it lands as one note in a conversation you’ve been having all along instead of a referendum on the relationship.
That’s the whole strategy: build the habit on the positive so the hard version has somewhere to land.
Today I will share a 6-step approach to talking about sex so that you feel prepared and confident: the words to use, the openers, how to ask, how to make a request specific enough to act on, and what to do when your partner says something that stings.
